Build a Strong Connection:
Spend time with your pet, pet them, and play together to create a strong bond. It’s like building a close friendship.
Pets have always been more than just companions; they play a pivotal role in enhancing our mental well-being. From the unconditional love of a dog to the calming presence of a cat, pets have a unique way of alleviating stress, anxiety, and loneliness. But how do we truly harness the therapeutic potential of our furry, feathered, or scaled friends? How can they aid in promoting mindfulness, reducing depression, or even enhancing social interactions? In this interview series, we are talking to veterinarians, psychologists, therapists, pet trainers, and other experts who can shed light on how to maximize the mental health benefits of having a pet. As a part of this series I had the distinct pleasure of interviewing Ronald L French.
Meet Ronald French, your trusted real estate expert with over 5 years of diverse experience in the industry. Ronald excels in various investment methods, such as buy and holds, flips, and wholesaling, and he’s a specialist in both short-term and long-term rental strategies.
His expertise extends to a range of real estate purchases, from condos and duplexes to single-family homes. Ronald is renowned for his rent-to-own solutions tailored for credit-challenged families and a knack for maximizing property returns.
What sets Ronald apart is his deep-rooted passion for real estate, ignited when he purchased his first home in Ohio in 1993 through owner financing. That transformative experience led him to remodel, repair, and flip numerous homes, giving back to the community by offering rent-to-own opportunities.
Thank you so much for joining us in this interview series! Before we start, our readers would love to “get to know you” a bit better. Can you tell us a bit about your background and your childhood backstory?
“My fondness for dogs dates back to my childhood in the small town of Canton, Ohio. I have vivid memories of bringing home stray or abandoned puppies. My mother, with a resigned smile, used to tell me, ‘Son, as much as you want to help, we can’t keep every pup or dog we find on the streets.’ Fast forward to today, I’m a passionate dog enthusiast with over 30 years of experience in owning and training dogs. Currently, I share my life with four Olde English Bulldogs and a rescue dog named Brownie with my family in Pensacola, Florida. Professionally, I work as a Physical Therapist Assistant and engage in Real-Estate Investing, a journey filled with its own set of surprises.
Can you share the most interesting story that happened to you since you started your career?
One of the most captivating real estate stories I’ve encountered involves Brownie, the rescue dog I came to adopt. While inspecting a property, I heard faint whimpering coming from an adjacent abandoned site. Upon closer examination, I discovered a frail, flea-ridden puppy. I couldn’t bear to leave her behind, so I wrapped her in a blanket and took her home for the night. The following morning, I rushed her to the vet for a check-up. The veterinarian cautioned that her condition was touch-and-go for a few days. Fast forward two years, and she’s now an integral part of my family, living her best life alongside us.”
Is there a particular book that made a significant impact on you? Can you share a story or explain why it resonated with you so much?
The book “Of Mice and Men” resonated with me for a couple of reasons. Firstly, it portrays how we as individuals can feel burdened by the weight of the world while taking on the responsibility of others due to health issues or disability. At some point in life, we may have to care for our sick parents, grandparents or other loved ones, unexpectedly. Secondly, the book highlights the fact that a person’s disability does not make their life any less meaningful in society. In fact, many people with disabilities have gone on to become inspirational figures to many.
Ok, thank you for all that. Now let’s move to the main focus of our interview. Can you share a personal story about how a pet has helped you or someone you know to improve mental wellness?
It comes quite naturally to me. On numerous occasions, I’ve returned from a challenging day at work or navigating real estate matters, only to be greeted by my dogs eagerly wagging their tails or stubs with enthusiasm, and this heartwarming welcome has made a considerable impact on my well-being, countless times.
While human interaction is essential for emotional well-being, in what ways do interactions with pets offer unique benefits that human relationships might not provide.
- Unconditional love: Pets, like dogs and cats, love us no matter what. They don’t judge or get upset with us.
- Happier moods: Being around pets can lift our spirits and make us feel happier. They can also give us comfort when we’re feeling down.
- No loneliness: Pets can keep us from feeling lonely, especially if we live alone. They give us company and make us feel needed.
Can you explain how this works? How do pets, particularly common ones like dogs and cats, biologically and psychologically help to alleviate human stress levels and anxieties?
Less stress: Quality time spent with pets has the remarkable ability to induce relaxation and reduce stress. A simple act like petting a dog or a cat can have a profound impact on our well-being. We’ve all experienced those stressful days at work, and it’s during these moments that our cherished pets offer comfort by nuzzling up or snuggling close for a soothing hug or gentle head petting. This heartwarming interaction can swiftly lower our blood pressure and ease stress levels, creating a sense of unparalleled, reciprocated love.”
In the backdrop of global events like pandemics or natural disasters, how have you seen pets playing a role in alleviating anxiety and providing comfort? Can you share some instances where pets have been integrated into therapeutic practices? How do they complement traditional therapeutic techniques? How Pets Offer Comfort During Crises.
Pets, like dogs and cats, have been a source of solace and support during global crises like pandemics and natural disasters. They help alleviate anxiety and provide emotional comfort in unique ways:
- Emotional Support: Petting and spending time with pets can reduce anxiety and offer comfort to individuals going through stressful or traumatic events.
- Therapy Animals: Specially trained therapy animals, such as dogs and cats, assist people in hospitals, nursing homes, disaster response locations, and schools, providing a calming presence and emotional support.
- Alleviating Loneliness: Pets are companions for people who feel isolated due to quarantines or lockdowns. They offer a sense of connection and reduce feelings of loneliness.
- PTSD Therapy: Service dogs are integrated into therapy for individuals with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), helping manage anxiety and stress triggers.
How Pets compliment Traditional Therapies?
Pets complement traditional therapeutic methods in these ways:
1. They offer non-judgmental and unconditional support.
2. Their presence creates a safe and soothing environment for therapy.
3. Pets encourage individuals to open up and engage more effectively.
4. They provide a sense of routine and responsibility, aiding in managing mental health conditions.
5. Integrating pets into therapy promotes emotional healing and well-being in various populations.
Not all pets are dogs or cats. From birds to fish to reptiles, how can individuals choose the right pet that aligns with their mental health needs?
Self-assessment: Start by understanding your own personality, lifestyle, and needs. Consider factors such as your activity level, living situation, and the amount of time you can commit to pet care.
Research: Learn about different pet species and breeds. Understand their characteristics, temperaments, and care requirements. Books, websites, and talking to pet owners can be valuable resources.
Consider energy levels: If you’re an active person who enjoys outdoor activities and exercise, a dog, especially an energetic breed, may be a good fit. On the other hand, if you prefer a more relaxed lifestyle, a cat or a lower-energy dog breed might be better.
Financial considerations: Pets come with costs, including food, veterinary care, grooming, and supplies. Ensure you can comfortably afford to care for your chosen pet.
How does the act of taking care of a pet — feeding, grooming, and exercising — contribute to an individual’s sense of purpose and mental well-being.

Ok. Here is the main question of our discussion. The past 5One of the most rewarding feelings in the world is the awareness that someone or something relies on your authentic love and care for their well-being. Each day, I rise at 5:00 a.m. to provide nourishment and take my dogs for a walk. This routine isn’t just beneficial for them; it’s also a source of discipline that nurtures both my furry companions and myself.” Years have been filled with upheaval and political uncertainty. Many people have become anxious from the dramatic jolts of the news cycle. From your experience or research, what are your “Five Ways To Maximize the Mental Health Benefits of Having a Pet?” Can you please share a story or example for each?
1. Build a Strong Connection:
- Spend time with your pet, pet them, and play together to create a strong bond. It’s like building a close friendship.
2. Stay Active Together:
- If you have a pet that needs exercise, like a dog, take them for walks or play games. It’s good for both of you and keeps you in a good mood.
3. Stick to a Routine:
- Make a daily schedule for you and your pet. It makes you both feel secure and organized. This can include feeding, grooming, and playtime.
4. Be Present in the Moment:
- When you’re with your pet, focus on what you’re doing. It’s a bit like meditation. Being in the moment can help reduce stress and worry.
5. Ask for Help if Needed:
- If you’re having a tough time with your mental health, talk to a professional, like a counselor or therapist. They can help you and understand the role your pet plays in your happiness.
The loss of a pet can be deeply traumatic. How can individuals navigate this grief, and how does it compare to other forms of loss in terms of mental health impact? To navigate the loss of a pet I suggest these 3 things:
- Allow Yourself to Grieve: Understand that it’s normal to grieve the loss of a pet. Allow yourself to feel sadness, anger, guilt, and other emotions without judgment.
- Create a Memorial: Consider creating a memorial for your pet, such as a photo album, a scrapbook, or a small ceremony. This can help you cherish the positive memories.
- Talk About It: Share your feelings with friends and family who understand the bond you had with your pet. They can provide support and comfort.
Comparison to loss in other forms such as human loss.
Losing a pet can be as emotionally significant as losing a human loved one, and the grief process is similar in many ways. However, there are some differences:
- Duration of the Relationship: The intensity of grief often depends on the depth and duration of the relationship. Losing a long-time pet companion can be as profound as losing a close human family member.
- Social Support: Grieving the loss of a pet may not always receive the same level of societal support and understanding as grieving a human loss. This can sometimes make pet loss grief feel more isolating.
- Role in Daily Life: Pets often play a unique role in daily life, providing companionship, comfort, and routine. Their loss can lead to an emotional void that’s challenging to fill.
- Subjective Experience: Grief is a deeply personal experience, and the intensity and duration of grief can vary widely between individuals. It’s important to remember that everyone’s grief journey is unique.
You are a person of great influence. If you could inspire a movement that would bring the most amount of peace to the greatest amount of people, what would that be?
If I could influence a movement! There would be no homelessness, especially for our veterans.
We are very blessed that some very prominent names in Business, VC funding, Sports and Entertainment read this column. Is there a person in the world, or in the US with whom you would love to have a private breakfast or lunch, and why? He or she might just see this if we tag them. :-)
Shaquille O’Neal. The main reason is, I admire the way he gives back to the community and how he offers help to people in need. This has made me understand that I can do more myself even if on a smaller level. Although I’m in the infant stages of my scholarship program “I’m currently working on contributing $1,000 for each home I invest in or flip, with the commitment to donate it to a child to support their participation in welding and HVAC programs for every property transaction I undertake.”
